Design

Size

When considering the design of the Samsung T5, the first aspect that is readily apparent is its small size. The T5 is a bit smaller than the size of a deck of cards. The exact dimensions are 74 x 57 x 10.5mm.

The T5 weighs a measly 51 grams making it so that you will barely even notice it is there. You can easily slip it into a pocket to transport anywhere, even the tiny front pocket of a tight pair of jeans. If you must travel often, this device will serve you exceptionally well.

Look

Comprised almost entirely out of metal, the T5 is sleek and sophisticated. The smooth finish will allow this device to fit in with any aesthetic. The 250GB and 500GB models come in an alluring blue. You can purchase the 1TB and 2TB variations in a stunning black. Both colors give off a refined look that will make its user look like a true professional.

Benchmarks

Here is how the Samsung T5 Portable SSD performed in benchmark testing:

  • CrystalDiskMark: 433MBps (read) and 323MBps (write)
  • Atto: 462MBps (read, 256mb) and 323MBps (write, 256mb)

Benchmarks

In tests comparing the speed of the T5 to a Samsung External HDD 500GB, the T5 performed transfers nearly five times as fast. This drive’s performance specifications are impressive. It has proven to be capable of transferring a 10GB file using Teracopy in less than 50 seconds.

Additionally, using a USB Type-C Gen 1 connector, the drive was able to reach read speeds of 433 MBps and write speeds of 323MBps using CrystalDiskMark. Under ATTO, the read speed increased to 462 MBps while the write speeds stayed the same. The generally reported MBps rate for transfers is 540.

When comparing the price to existing options, for the 1TB option, the T5 is 20% more expensive than the T3. While the T5 does have much more functionality, this additional price is something to keep in mind if you are happy with your T3’s performance.

However, if you are itching for an upgrade, then you might have to take advantage of a seasonal deal like Cyber Monday.

Performance

The T5 is capable of storing even the most cumbersome pieces of data such as 4K video or high-resolution photos. Transferring and backing up these large pieces of data will now be possible at unprecedented speeds.

The device features optional password protection of your data so that you never have to worry about your drive falling into the wrong hands. This protection is possible due to the AES 256-bit hardware encryption. You can set and quickly change the password using the device’s accompanying software, which we discuss later.

Also, you need not have any doubts about the performance of the T5 because a 3-year limited warranty backs it. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that this warranty does not cover losses you may incur from the loss of data or information that you have chosen to store on the device.

Hardware

The T5 is available in four different drive sizes. These sizes are 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. No matter how much information you need to store remotely, a model of this device will have you covered. An ASMedia mSATA-to-USB bridge controller is also part of the purchase package. You can use this drive with Android devices.

The package comes with both a USB Type-C to C adaptor as well as a USB Type-C to A cord so that you do not need to spend extra time or money to connect to the devices you need. A full list of compatible devices is available on Samsung’s support website.

Durability

The manufacturer upgraded this drive from previous models so that it can withstand drops of up to two meters. However, it’s worth noting that Samsung stated that they derived this number from tests under controlled conditions.

The point is that while you probably shouldn’t throw your T5 down the stairs, it will likely be fine if it happens to fall out of your pocket. This functionality is possible because the T5 is of sturdy design with no moving parts.

Durability is an invaluable feature, especially for frequent travelers. After all, you won’t always have control over the treatment of your luggage. A portable SSD drive that can sustain an impact without damaging the data is essential.

One thing to keep in mind is that you do need to take care of the device to a certain degree because it is not resistant to water or dust. With a robust design inside and out, you will be able to accomplish your work no matter where you go.

Software

The Samsung T5 comes embedded with software that is compatible with both PCs and Macs, allowing the user to unlock more functionality. This software will enable users to easily set password protections if they so desire and quickly access firmware updates.

A mobile app is also available, and it works for both Android smartphones and tablets. All these features make managing your T5 a breeze no matter where you are.
